Salesperson License Requirements

Individuals who perform acts of real estate services in Iowa must be licensed by the Real Estate Commission. A salesperson license gives you the ability to work in the office of a real estate broker as an employee or independent contractor. For the purposes of the License Professor, a salesperson is similar to sales agents in other states. Purchasing the sales agent package and selecting Iowa will provide you with national questions as well as Iowa-specific salesperson questions.

Minimum Requirements to Apply for the Salesperson License

  • Must be 18 years of age – no residency or citizenship requirement
  • Must be sponsored by broker after they pass the exam; cannot apply for an inactive license
  • Complete the 60-hour pre-license course from an approved provider
  • Successfully pass the state and national portions of the examination
  • Undergo a criminal history and background investigation
  • Obtain errors and omissions insurance

Broker License Requirements

A Iowa Real Estate Broker License is required of individuals who want to who perform acts of real estate services in Iowa. A broker license would allow you to operate your own real estate business or act as a broker for a corporation or partnership. Purchasing the broker package and selecting Iowa will provide you with national exam prep questions as well as Iowa-specific broker practice questions.

Minimum Requirements to Apply for the Broker License

  • A broker applicant must have 24 months of active salesperson experience and complete 72 hours of broker pre-license education within the preceding 24 months
  • Successfully pass the state and national portions of the examination
  • Undergo a criminal history and background investigation
  • Provide verification of current errors and omissions insurance
  • Include current wall certificate with the application
  • Brokers who have never renewed as a salesperson must provide documentation of attendance of the following three courses: 12 hours buying practices, 12 hours listing practices and 12 hours developing professionalism and ethical practices

We know you may still have a number of questions about obtaining your real estate license in Iowa. Here are the most commonly asked ones. If you still have questions, just go to our contact page and let us know. 

The salesperson exam contains 80 national questions and 40 state-specific questions. You must correctly answer 70% to pass. This would mean at least 56 of the national questions and 28 of the state specific questions to pass. 

The broker exam contains 80 national questions and 40 state-specific questions. You must correctly answer 75% to pass. This would mean at least 60 of the national questions and 30 of the state specific questions to pass. 

Just because you have a criminal record, it does not mean that you will be prevented from receiving your license. It is always best to provide details on your application. If you are unsure, you can always call the commission to clarify what type of convictions are allowed, and which are not. 

You are given a total of 3 hours for the salesperson exam. You are are allowed 120 minutes (2 hours) for the national portion and 60 minutes for the state portion, for a total of 180 minutes (3 hours).
