How to Get Your Rhode Island Real Estate License

Rhode Island offers Salesperson and Broker licenses through the Department of Business Regulation.

Salesperson License Requirements

• Complete all prelicensing education requirements before taking the exam
• Pass both the national (80 questions) and state (50 questions) portions, 70% each
• File your license application within one year of the date you passed (the later of the two exam dates if taken separately)
• Submit a complete, signed, and notarized application — Rhode Island residents must attest to the applicant's reputation and recommend the license be granted
• Allow approximately three weeks for application processing

Broker License Requirements

• Complete broker prelicensing education
• Pass the Broker exam (80 national + 60 state questions)
• Submit your application within the same one-year window

Mutual Recognition with Florida

Candidates currently licensed in Florida at the same license level may be eligible to take only the Rhode Island State Part, under the terms of the Mutual Recognition Agreement between Florida and Rhode Island.

Incomplete Applications

Rhode Island explicitly warns that incomplete applications will be returned for correction, causing processing delays — double-check every question is answered before submitting.

Step 3: Submit to the Department of Business Regulation

Step 4: Wait for license issuance

Processing takes approximately three weeks for a complete application.
