Sales Associate License Requirements

Individuals who perform acts of real estate services in Kentucky must be licensed by the Real Estate Commission. A sales associate license gives you the ability to work in the office of a real estate broker as an employee or independent contractor. For the purposes of the License Professor, a sales associate is similar to sales agents in other states. Purchasing the sales agent package and selecting Kentucky will provide you with national questions as well as Kentucky-specific salesperson questions.

Minimum Requirements to Apply for the Sales Associate License

  • 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Six semester credit hours for an accredited college or university OR 96 classroom hours in approved real estate courses
  • If licensed in a third state you must include a license certification listing the state(s) along with your application

Broker License Requirements

A Kentucky Real Estate Broker License is required of individuals who want to who perform acts of real estate services in Kentucky. A broker license would allow you to operate your own real estate business or act as a broker for a corporation or partnership. Purchasing the broker package and selecting Kentucky will provide you with national exam prep questions as well as Kentucky-specific broker practice questions.

Minimum Requirements to Apply for the Broker License

  • 18 years of age
  • Must have actively been engaged in the real estate business for at least 20 hours per week for a two year period
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 12 semester credit hours for an accredited college or university OR 336 classroom hours in approved real estate courses
  • Criminal background check
  • If licensed in a third state you must include a license certification listing the state(s) along with your application

The sales associate exam contains 80 national questions and 50 state-specific questions. You must correctly answer 75% to pass. This would mean at least 60 of the national questions and 38 of the state specific questions to pass.

Just because you have a criminal record, it does not mean that you will be prevented from receiving your license. It is always best to provide details on your application. If you are unsure, you can always call the commission to clarify what type of convictions are allowed, and which are not. 

You are given a total of 4 hours for the sales associate exam. You are are allowed 150 minutes (2.5 hours) for the national portion and 90 minutes (1.5 hours) for the state portion, for a total of 240 minutes (4 hours).
